Central Authentication Service
The University of Manchester Central Authentication Service is key to accessing e-resources off-campus.
It is the central authentication service that is used to check that you are a student or staff member of the university.
When accessing e-resources using the off-campus links there are two basic steps (repeated for each resource provider):
- You tell the e-resource provider that you are from the University of Manchester.
- The e-resource provider uses the UoM central authentication service to check your username and password
Note 1. The authentication details may be cached by your browser. This means that if you access several resources you may only have to repeat step 1 if you are in the same browser session. (Also you can do step 2 and then step 1.)
Note 2. For University of Manchester resources, e.g. Blackboard, Student Portal …, step 1 is not needed. You are presented with the central authentication page straight away.
