Bloomberg – getting the know the system

BloombergYesterday, we had an initial staff training session on Bloomberg Professional.

The idea is that Bloomberg is easy to use: you know the market you are interested in (equities, bonds, …), type what you are looking for and it will offer suggestions to keep you on the right track. Designed for a trader/analyst who thinks in terms of spot rates, swaps, spreads, yields, portfolio performance … rather than a librarian with a background in computer science.

There does seem to be lots and lots of data, and I’m sure it will be popular with staff and students.

Tip of the day: pressing the Help key twice starts an instant messaging session with the helpful staff at the Bloomberg help desk.

At the moment the Excel add-in, which is needed for bulk data downloads, does not work. It needs to use a specific port that is currently used by Sophos (our virus management software). Our friends in IT should be able to provide a solution to this problem soon.
[UPDATE 18 August 2009 – technical and admin problems resolved – Bloomberg Excel add-in now working]
