e-journal access off-campus

Starting with the article reference, the first thing to focus on is the journal name.

From the e-journal A-Z list search result you may find that the journal is available from several suppliers. Check the years available as these often differ.

E-journal A-Z list results

We have now identified the e-journal database that will give access to the article. The next stage is authentication so that the supplier knows you are from the University of Manchester, and then you can get the article. Examples and Notes below.

Example Journal 1

For Information Management Journal 2004 we could select the ABI/Inform Global link. This takes you to a login page as you need to authenticate yourself as from the University of Manchester (which includes Manchester Business School).

  1. Select Log in through your library or institution
  2. Select United Kingdom (UK Federation) as Region
  3. Select University of Manchester as school or institution
  4. At University of Manchester Central Authentication Service – use your username and password (See what this looks like https://bizlib247.wordpress.com/2010/04/12/central-authentication-service/ )

That is the authentication part done. Now you can use the rest of the article reference (year, volume, issue,  page no. etc.) to select the specific article. Once you have found the article, the Full Text – PDF link  is the one to download it.

Example Journal 2

For Harvard Business Review 1960 we could select the Business Source Premier link. This takes you to a login page as you need to authenticate yourself as from the University of Manchester (which includes Manchester Business School).

  1. Select Shibboleth Login (not the most obvious choice we admit)
  2. Select UK Higher Education as Region or group

Once you have found the article, the PDF Full Text  link  is the one to download it.

Notes

Authentication can vary. If you have already authenticated then your browser may have cached the details so that you don’t need to provide them again. If you are running VPN then your authentication is by your PC being part of the virtual network.

Note that the e-journal A-Z list will include information on how to logon to the relevant e-journal database.
